Prostate Cancer — Practical Tips
Below are some practical tips that may help you manage your
prostate cancer
treatment and recovery:
|
1. |
Tighten the muscles you use to stop a bowel movement. |
|
2. |
At the same time, tighten the muscles at the base of your penis (when both sets
of the muscles are tightened, you will feel a compression between your penis and
your anus). |
|
3. |
Hold both sets of muscles as firmly as you can for five seconds. |
|
4. |
Release both sets of muscles and relax for one minute. |
|
5. |
Repeat the exercise six to ten times, three or four rounds per day. |
|
6. |
Increase the number of repititions and decrease the time in between as you feel
stronger. |
- Try swimming, flexibility exercises, or other activities with smooth motions
if your doctor says that you can exercise.
- Ask your doctor about Kegel exercises if you have urinary incontinence after radical
prostatectomy. These exercises involve contracting and releasing the pelvic muscles
to help with urinary continence.
- Read about prostate cancer. Some men find that reading about their
health problems helps them feel more in control.
- Get help around the house. Ask friends or family to help with cleaning,
lawn work, etc. Or hire a cleaning service to come to your house during difficult
periods.
- Eat a good diet during your treatment and recovery. Ask your doctor
or a registered dietician for tips and guidelines.
